Simple syrup is essential for making cocktails and other beverages. This is because it blends so well with other liquids to make them sweeter! Simple syrup is super easy for you to make yourself. This syrup is also referred to as “sugar syrup”.
Simple syrup isn’t just used for drinking, it can also be used to sweeten foods such as fruits and baked goods. It is sometimes drizzled over desserts or used as a glaze. Let’s take a look at how to make this syrup at home.
Traditional simple syrup is made from one-part water to one-part sugar (1:1).
Start with the traditional white sugar and once you have mastered using this, start to experiment with other sugars.
Heat the water in a saucepan over a low heat until hot. Do not let boil.
Slowly add in the sugar whilst stirring. Stir until fully dissolved.
Leave the syrup to cool to room temperature. Transfer the syrup into a glass jar and store in a refrigerator for up to three weeks.
To achieve a richer syrup, simply adjust the proportions. Use the 2:1 sugar-to-water ratio. Bartenders and home cocktail enthusiasts prefer to use rich simple syrup because it has a thicker texture which can add a little more body to a cocktail.
Heating the sugar and water together will take longer to heat so it is recommended to heat the water first. After mastering the simple syrup have a go at adding different flavourings! Common flavours include vanilla, mint, cinnamon, lemon and ginger.
That is everything you need to know for making simple syrups! Have fun practising this technique and making those cocktails.
