How To Open A Bottle Of Champagne

Opening a bottle of champagne, sounds simple right? But, are you opening your bottles the correct way? We are going to be guiding you through the right way to open a champagne bottle.

1. Remove the foil

  • Start by removing any foil that is covering the cork then untwist the wire that protects the cork.
  • Keep your thumb on the cork in case of an accidental pop whilst taking the wire and foil off.
  • Only remove the wire if you are ready to open the bottle otherwise there is a risk of the bottle uncorking unexpectedly.

2. Securely hold the bottle

  • Grip onto the bottle with your dominant hand for full support.
  • Rest the bottle on your hip for extra support.
  • Have a kitchen towel at hand in case of any accidental spillages whilst removing the cork.

3. Twist the bottle not the cork

  • Slowly turn the bottle back and forth with your dominant hand for a strong grip.
  • Place your other hand on top of the cork to keep steady.
  • Be sure to be twisting the bottle back and forth and keep the cork steady to pop it correctly.

4. Pop open the bottle

  • For a quiet opening, start to slowly twist until the cork is just about to pop.
  • Once you are at this step, hold firmly onto the cork.
  • Slowly and gently pull the remainder of the cork out of the bottle.
  • If you do this slow enough there will not be a popping noise.

For a more dramatic opening when at a party for an example, remove the cork at a quicker pace. Shake the bottle for more of an effect, however, this will cause a large spillage. Aim the bottle away from everybody for a safe opening.

5. Pour into a champagne flute

  • Slowly pour the champagne into a flute, this must be done slowly to avoid the bubbles overflowing.
  • Do not slant the glass, hold it upright as you pour.
  • For the best results, fill a third of each glass with champagne.
  • Keep the champagne bottle chilled with one of our ice buckets.

Top Tips

  1. To keep your bottles chilled, use a mixture of 50% ice and 50% water in the chill bucket.
  2. Always dry the bottle before opening it.
  3. The less sound, the better! A small “hiss” is what you’ll want to hear, signalling that the bottle was chilled properly.
  4. Never let go of the cork when you pull it out.

FAQs

1. How Long Does Champagne Last Once Opened?

Most types of champagne will keep for three to five days when properly stored. This can be useful to know if you ever open a bottle but don't consume it at a party.

2. How Should I Store Opened Champagne?

To keep your champagne fresh and bubbly, simply hang a spoon from the mouth of your bottle and chill it. The neck of the bottle is kept colder by the spoon's metal, which forms a chilly air seal above the warmer champagne.

3. Does Champagne Go Bad If Not Opened?

Champagne lasts for a surprisingly long time! If not opened, non-vintage champagne will last 3 to 4 years. Vintage champagne will last 5 to 10 years.
