It's Pancake Day (Shrove Tuesday), but what exactly is Shrove Tuesday and why do we eat pancakes?
Let's get to know the day a bit better, by discussing what it is and how you can make the perfect pancake!

What is Shrove Tuesday?

Shrove Tuesday is also know as Pancake Day, or in other countries such as France and the USA, it is known as 'Mardi Gras' or 'Fat Tuesday'.

Pancake Day always takes place on a Tuesday in either February or March. It's the day before Ash Wednesday (the start of Lent).

Lent is a six week period leading up to Easter, it is one of the most important days of the year for many Christians around the world.

During Lent, people often give up on things that are bad for them, e.g. fast food.

Why do we eat pancakes?

The reason why we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday is that, in Christian traditions, they were a way of using up all rich foods such as sugar, eggs and milk right before the start of Lent.

The traditional pancake recipe

Ingredients:
  • 200g plain flour
  • 350ml milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • Pinch of salt
Method:
  1. Put the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl.
  2. Create a well in the centre and slowly add the milk and lightly whisked eggs.
  3. Whisk the mixture until you have a smooth batter.
  4. Add a tablespoon of vegetable oil and whisk again.
  5. Take a frying pan and add a small amount of oil to it.
  6. Add a ladleful of mixture to the pan and immediately swirl around to even the batter out.
  7. Cook the pancake for 30-40 seconds until pancake is golden.
