Drinkstuff Cocktail Club Flavour of the Month - Lychee

Welcome to Drinkstuff's Cocktail Club flavour of the month! This month due to popular demand our flavour of the month is the sweet and floral, Lychee! Kicking off our Cocktail Club, we are featuring the Monin Le Fruit Lychee Fruit Mix. There are other lychee flavoured sugar syrups and purees out there, but we like the Monin Fruity mixes. They have a fantastic consistency and we love the fruity bits that add texture to your drink.

What is a Lychee?

Before we talk about the Fruit Mix and the cocktails, we thought we'd answer one important question, what is a lychee?! Lychees are an ancient Chinese fruit. Grown on trees, lychees are native to China, Taiwan and other parts of Southeast Asia. They have a rough pinky-red rind that you peel to reveal a creamy white pulp, that has a texture like grapes.

Lychees have a very floral, perfumy smell, and a very fragrant sweet flavour, which can sometimes be on the tart side. You can also pick up some very subtle citrus notes in the aftertaste as well. Some people suggest that lychee can remind them of roses and some muscat grapes.

Lychees are in season from November to January, but thanks to the Monin Le Fruit you can enjoy that sweet, floral flavour all year round.

Monin Fruit Mix VS Syrup VS Puree

Now we've covered what lychees are, you might be thinking what's the difference between the fruit mixes and a syrup? Or a fruit mix and a puree? The basics are:

  • A syrup is mostly sugar with fruit flavours
  • A Monin Fruit mix is usually 50% fruit 50% sugar
  • A puree is mostly fruit with a little bit of sugar

So if we take that information, the great thing about a fruit mix over a puree is that you won't need to add any additional sugar to a drink. You might now be thinking ok, so why not use a syrup, why use the fruit mix. Well, for a bigger fruity flavour and because of the texture. A fruit mix has a consistency close to that of a puree, so will add the texture of a puree to a drink. Monin Fruit Mixes also have chunks of fruit throughout, again giving it that puree feel. The fruit mixes are also a stronger fruity flavour. A lot of syrups can have a more subtle flavour to them as they're mostly for sweetening a drink, so if you want a drink that packs a punch the fruit mix is for you.
